Is plant-based meat healthy or dangerous?

ccowp by ccowp

Many people are searching for more sustainable and healthier ways to eat as more research is being done on the health and environmental effects of meat consumption.

Clinical research has also shown that a diet based on whole foods and plants can help prevent or treat chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, etc.

It’s not surprising that meat substitutes made from plants are becoming increasingly popular. The meatless “meats” are becoming more affordable and tastier, which makes them more available than ever.

Some people worry that the plant-based alternatives may not be as healthful as initially thought.

What are plant-based meats?

The “meats”, which are made from plant-based ingredients, are meant to resemble the taste, texture and appearance of real meat. These “meats” are made with a variety plant-based ingredients.

While each brand and product has a unique recipe, common ingredients are:

  • soy
  • peas
  • tofu
  • seitan
  • tempeh
  • jackfruit

Also, they include fillers and binders such as flour, starch from potatoes, and oils. Some brands add colors, flavors and other ingredients to their products in order to make them taste like meat.

Are Plant-Based Alternatives Better Than Meat?

Over the last few years, many clinical studies have shown that plant-based proteins are more nutritious than meats and may be less harmful for your health.

A partial substitution of meat for plant-based alternatives will improve your diet.

Depending on the brand and product, plant-based meats can provide a significant amount of fiber and healthy fats while containing fewer calories.

The sodium content of plant-based meats has raised some concern. Some products are high in sodium, which may harm those with high blood pressure and other health conditions.

Plant-based meats are also less protein dense than meats. Protein deficiencies are rare. Even if meat is not eaten, you are unlikely to be protein-deficient if your diet is normal.

Prioritize whole plants

Although plant-based meats are a healthier option to meat, they’re still processed foods.

If you want to improve your health, a plant-based diet is a great choice.

It’s important to keep in mind that plant-based eating is not only about eliminating meat and animal products. Healthy plant-based eating prioritizes whole unprocessed foods such as vegetables, fruits and beans.

You can reduce your meat intake by using plant-based meats without sacrificing the taste or satisfaction of your favorite dishes. Include plenty of other vegetables to your diet.
